We’re finally back in the eggs. That’s more eggs in 3 days than we’ve gotten since the end May. Pru laid 2 in the last two days, as did Lucy. Agnes and Penny were both good for an egg a day. I’ve got them organized by hen so you can see who lays what color.
Going counter-clockwise: The dark brown one at the bottom and the speckled one to the right are both from Lucy – some of hers have more dark deposits than others. The next 3 large smooth brown ones are from Penny. The 2 large lighter colored eggs are from Pru. And the three dainty ones in the center are courtesy of Agnes.
This is why we have chickens. There’s nothing to compare to the pleasure of collecting these magic pearls of rich goodness every day. They’re usually slightly warm to the touch, smooth and each unique from any other. I almost want to put them in the bowl on the counter and keep them there as art, but of course into the fridge they go.
I’m already planning what I’ll make for OLS #7 this week with the sudden return of eggy goodness to the Urban Hennery. Spaghetti Carbonara? Spinach Fritatta? Cheddar Broccoli Quiche? Ham, mushroom and Monterey Jack Omelets? So many options, so few nights to cook this week.
In chick news, Agnes has pretty much abandoned the little girls to their own devices. She stopped sleeping with them late last week, and now they seem to pretty much be hanging out without her during the day. At night Maisie keeps the little banties warm in the straw where they pile up. Her toe is still swollen, quite crooked, but still warm to the touch. Maybe she won’t lose it after all. She seems to be in good health otherwise tho, so I’m not worried about losing her, she just won’t be quite as pretty as she could have been.
I’m also starting to be fairly certain that Lola is not a show girl. That she is in fact a cross-dressing rooster. But then again, until they get a bit bigger or she starts to crow, I can’t really be sure. Maybe by Labor Day the mystery will be solved. Have to hope so as it’s getting a bit crowded in the coop – I’d like to send any new roosters on their way as soon as possible.

Yay for backyard chickens!
Cross dressing rooster, I almost sprayed my chai all over my monitor on that one.(:
[...] doing eggs for an OLS meal as they feel a bit like cheating, but it’s so nice to be back in the eggs that I thought we should enjoy [...]
I love chooks. We have three who we originally named after different female characters in Shakespeare’s plays, but our three chooks look so identical that they’re all just called ‘chook’ now. :P
We get two to three eggs a day; sometimes one of them takes a day off. We haven’t bought eggs from the store for about two years now.
Just found your blog and I’ll be happily adding it to our blogroll after I’ve sent off this comment – so nice to find fellow urban hen keepers! Cheers! :)
