I don’t usually get that excited about eggs anymore. But today we got the first egg ever from Danny our tiny black banty hen. It’s the smallest chicken egg I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t find a ruler, but it was smaller than a standard 35mm roll of film. And about a third of the size of the eggs that Penny lays.
It’s so cute! Even Agnes lays bigger eggs than that. Hopefully they’ll get a bit bigger as she gets into this egg thing. Maisie is looking like she might start to lay in the next week or so. Her hips are getting wider and when you touch her back she now “assumes the position”. Can’t wait to see what color they are…

Very cute! I wonder if it also contains a mini yolk.
That is adorable. One of the families that I work for gave a dozen eggs, and there were a few tiny pinkish banty eggs in the bunch. My daughter swore they tasted better, but she’s seven. Cute = better, in elementary school, anyway!
We got a tiny egg like that, too, from one of our girls this fall. We’ve saved it –Dan says he’s going to drill it and dry it out. Right now it is in the fridge, but you can see it here: http://henbogle.blogspot.com/2007/10/wee-little-egg.html
The difference –our girls are all full size chickens!
Hey ladies – it is cute, isn’t it?
Ali, I remember when you got that egg (I’m a fan). I’m just shocked at how little it is even compared to the ones that Agnes lays. We’re going to crack it open tomorrow and I’m guessing that it will be mostly yolk.
When I was writing “The Farmstead Egg Cookbook” I did a lot of testing of recipes with the banty eggs vs standard eggs. Did you know that the smaller the egg, the larger percentage of yolk? I once ruined a cake using all banty eggs. Too much yolk! But, omelets with all banty eggs are decadence defined. Enjoy!
A friend of mine keeps bantams and passes any eggs they lay on to me because she doesn’t eat eggs, I poach them and put them on salad yummy!
